As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, it also reflects on a legacy of enterprise and innovation — American companies have not only driven economic growth, but helped shape culture, influence everyday life, and define global standards for branding, design, and communication. To assess the scope of this business legacy, TIME, in collaboration with Statista, conducted a nationally representative survey of U.S. consumers to identify 250 companies that have achieved commercial success while making a lasting societal impact. The resulting list spans generations — from early American institutions such as Colgate-Palmolive, founded in 1806, to 21st-century innovators like OpenAI — many of which have become internationally recognized names. Ford, Apple, Coca-Cola, Walmart, Amazon and McDonald’s top the list; you can see the full list here.
