The curriculum emphasizes both conceptual rigor and hands-on making across print, digital, and experimental forms. Students move from foundational coursework into advanced studios that prioritize process, iteration, and the development of a distinct personal voice. Critique and collaboration are central to the program, creating an environment where students learn to articulate ideas, respond to feedback, and push their work further.
Coursework in PSUGD is grounded in real-world experience. Students work with external clients, develop projects for real audiences, and help produce public-facing events like exhibitions and showcases. From concept through execution, these experiences build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and prepare students to share their work in professional contexts.
The program is deeply embedded in Portland’s design community. Through guest speakers, alumni mentorship, internships, and public-facing events like Be Honest—our annual showcase hosted at Wieden+Kennedy—students connect with practicing designers and share their work beyond the classroom.
In Fall 2026, the School of Art + Design will move into a new, purpose-built facility designed by LEVER Architecture. The building will bring together studios, labs, and shared spaces to support interdisciplinary learning, expanded making capabilities, and deeper collaboration across disciplines.
PSUGD graduates go on to work at leading studios and companies including Wieden+Kennedy, Instrument, Nike, and Google, as well as launching their own creative practices. Alumni are recognized for their adaptability, strong point of view, and commitment to thoughtful, engaged design.
